Empty Spaces

Major Design Project: picture book & toolkit

Empty Spaces is a bereavement picture book and toolkit for parents and guardians of children ages 11-15 years old. The picture book covers the complex physical and emotional changes that children experience following the death of a loved one. This book is inspired by my journey working through my father’s death in my second year of studies, and observations made concerning the lack of bereavement resources for children.

Wherever You Go

Assignment: picture book, animated GIF

“Wherever You Go” is a picture book aimed to inspire children ages 5-7 to support one another’s aspirations. This prospective picture book follows the story of two pets as they adventure through magical and enchanting landscapes accompanied by a poem. As part of digital marketing collateral for this project, I created an animated GIF of my illustrated cover design using Photoshop and After Effects.

Water Falls

Assignment: Picture book

“Water Falls” is a prospective picture book based on a poem featured in the film Paterson (2016). I explored using various visual storytelling techniques, textures & type design to emulate the tactility of flowing rain. The final outcome led to words of encouragement from the director of the film, Jim Jarmusch, as well as a nomination for my work to be used in marketing for Western Sydney University’s Humanities, Communications and Arts faculty.

A Room of One’s Own

Personal: book cover redesign

As a personal design exercise, I redesigned the cover of Virginia Woolf's essay 'A Room of One's Own' in order to appeal to a younger audience. The cover features a full bleed illustration of an English field of wild grasses and weeds, hinting at Woolf’s reference to the lack of female autonomy as “Her gift is all but grown about with weeds and bound with briars”. The lighter colours and desire line through the field represent the ultimately hopeful message of Woolf’s essay as she predicted a positive trajectory for women’s literature and female autonomy.

Made in the West 2022 (short-listed)

Made in the West Film Festival: print & digital collateral

As a member of the Burrows Studio design team, I was tasked with creating illustrative elements for the 2022 Made in the West Film Festival. The collateral included posters, a promotional banner, an award certificate and a web banner that would be used for marketing the event. All illustrative elements were designed in celebration of filmmaking and consideration of Greater Western Sydney’s unique cultural footprint.

Birth Flower Designs

Personal: physical & digital prints, AR filter

I illustrated 12 unique designs showcasing the birth flowers of each month. These designs were used to create various physical products such as tote bags, stickers & notebooks in addition to digital desktop & mobile wallpapers available on my Redbubble & Ko-fi. This project required me to learn how to create seamless patterns and well-balanced floral arrangements for print. I marketed the products on my social channels and designed Instagram and Facebook story filters using AR software.

Menu Redesign

Cafe Luna’s Ray: menu template

I recently had the opportunity to work on a menu redesign project for a local cafe. The illustrative elements are inspired by the outdoor seating area, such as the greenery, terracotta pots and gingham tablecloth.

Wedding Gift

Personal: embroidered apparel

As a wedding favour for my cousin, I designed a set of embroidered sweaters for her and her partner. It was important to create a design that could be digitised for embroidery whilst capturing the likeness of the couple.
